10 FEMALE PILOTS YOU NEED TO FOLLOW ON INSTAGRAM

For decades, the stereotype has been that men fly the aircraft and women serve the beverages. Times and beliefs are steadily changing, but the gender gap between men and women in the cockpit is still very wide.

While it’s true that the female pilot is still much rarer than her male counterpart, the female aviators that make up 4-6% of the pilot population are an impressive group and they hope to see more women join them.

There’s good news: The Institute for Women of Aviation Worldwide says that recent female student pilot statistics are encouraging and that more women will soon be taking to the skies in the cockpit not the cabin.

If you are looking for some inspirational female pilot role models and mentors for yourself or a young aspiring female aviator, go follow the Instagram accounts of these fantastic women.

Jodi Rueger, a Canadian pilot, says that she uses her “flying habit” to afford her flying habit. She may fly passenger jets for Swoop – a budget Canadian airline, but that is her day job. Her true passion is for aerobatic competitions. Jodi loves competing in International Council of Air Shows (ICAS) events and teaching aerobatic flying to other pilots.

Follow Jodi to see how her straight and level flights free her up to spend time perfecting complex aerial maneuvers for air shows. Jodi also maintains a YouTube channel where she shares more detail of the work that goes into preparing for a show. There she will talk you through some of the moves and give you a behind the scenes look at what it takes to become an aerobatic pilot.

WHERE ARE SUE & MIKE?

We met Sean’s lovely wife, Jodi Rueger, a commerical and stunt pilot herself. Sean proposed by having her flip the airplane upside down with a ring tied to a string on his parachute, so it flew up to eye level when they hung upside down!

VIRTUAL AIRSHOW TO FEATURE BIG NAMES, BIG FUN!

Welcome to the world of pandemic-proof event planning and The Socially Distant Airshow.

As COVID-19 has forced the cancellation of countless events, the idea of a virtual airshow has been discussed by many. But three airshow announcers who are the voices behind “Show Center – The Airshow Podcast,” have decided to take it one step further.

“When we were doing our Show Centre podcast, it was Matt Jolley who suggested we should do it as a fundraiser,” explained Ric Peterson, who co-hosts the podcast with Jolley and Rob Reider.

Their collaboration led to the creation of The Socially Distant Airshow – a name that explains itself perfectly well during these unprecedented times. Scheduled for April 21, 22 and 23 at 3 p.m. EDT, each day’s two-hour show will be broadcast live by LiveAirshowTV via its Facebook, YouTube and Instagram channels.

The first act to sign on to The Socially Distant Airshow was Mike Wiskus, who flies the orange Lucas Oil Pitts biplane. The first team to come on board was the Canadian Forces Snowbirds. The rest of the star-studded civilian and military lineup includes such beloved airshow acts as Patty Wagstaff, Adam Baker, the AeroShell Aerobatic Team, the Belgian Air Force “Dark Falcon” F-16 solo display, Mike Goulian, Jodi Rueger, Ken and Kyle Fowler, Matt Younkin, the U.S. Navy Rhino Demonstration Team, Rob Holland and the Shockwave Jet Truck sporting brand new livery for 2020.

“The flow will be very much like an airshow, with an opening, middle and end,” explained Peterson. “There will be time slots of two, six and 10 minutes for military and civilian performers. We’re trying to figure out a way to include the air bosses as well.”

We share the impactful and inspiring stories, perspectives, ideas, and actions from individuals who are leaving definitive marks on the world.

@AEROBATICWOMEN
AEROBATIC WOMEN INTERNATIONAL

My name is Jodi Rueger and I'm a Canadian aerobatic pilot. 🇨🇦 I got started in air cadets doing a flying scholarship for my private pilot license. When I went to Sault College and experienced my first spin in a Zlin 242L I was hooked and needed to find a way to pull Gs more often. When I graduated I moved to BC to work at a flight school with an aerobatic plane and set half my pay cheque aside every month to learn tailwheel and aerobatics and worked a second job bartending to make up for it. Eventually I got recognized in competition aerobatics and was brought on as a ferry pilot and team manager in the airshow circuit where I was mentored into becoming an airshow performer as well. I've flown 82 types of aircraft to date and perform and compete in a Pitts S1S and RV6 . .
